I<\/span>\u00a0teach Elementary Design at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi, where I am now in my second year of employment. Three years ago, during my first visit to ACS, I observed a Middle School Design class using a badge-based system. Students were fully immersed in projects like 3D design, songwriting, robotics, and microcontrollers. The room buzzed with energy and passion\u2014it was truly inspiring!
\nThat experience sparked my desire to create a similar program for upper elementary students\u2014one that encourages independence, creativity, and self-motivation.<\/p>\n\n

Why self-directed learning?<\/h2>\n

As an educator, I\u2019ve always been passionate about inquiry-based, student-centered learning. At ACS Abu Dhabi, self-directed learning is a core approach, and I wanted to empower my students to take ownership of their learning.<\/p>\n

With just 40 minutes per week for each lesson, I needed a system that maximized learning time while giving students choice and flexibility. I also wanted to find a way to talk less so students could spend more time actively learning. Badges became the perfect solution!<\/p>\n

Setting up a system to keep students engaged and on track<\/h2>\n

1. Start Small<\/h3>\n

Begin with simple tasks to introduce students to self-directed learning. I guide the whole class through the first badge, modeling the process before letting them work independently. This helps them understand expectations and build confidence.<\/p>\n\n

2. Guide, Don\u2019t Solve<\/h3>\n

Resist the urge to give students the answers! Instead, encourage them to troubleshoot and make their own decisions. This fosters resilience, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. I embed short video tutorials inside the badge journals to help guide students with skill development.<\/p>\n\n

3. Create a Routine<\/h3>\n

Consistency is key. A predictable structure\u2014such as starting each session with a quick goal-setting activity\u2014helps students stay focused and organized.<\/p>\n\n

4. Let Them Choose<\/h3>\n

Students should select their own badges based on their interests. This autonomy keeps them motivated and invested in their learning. Just remind them to commit to their choices to build persistence and follow-through.<\/p>\n\n

5. Set Clear Goals<\/h3>\n

Break tasks into manageable steps. Encourage students to set small, achievable goals at the start of each session to maintain momentum and track progress.<\/p>\n\n

6. Celebrate Success<\/h3>\n

Recognition keeps students motivated! Celebrate achievements\u2014big or small\u2014whether it\u2019s completing a badge, finishing a prototype, or making steady progress. In my class, students earn custom vinyl stickers when they complete a badge.<\/p>\n\n

7. Encourage Sharing<\/h3>\n

Reflection and peer discussions help students articulate their learning, recognize challenges, and support each other. Sharing experiences reinforces understanding and builds a collaborative learning environment.<\/p>\n\n\n
